ECASARD MEMBERS PRESENT THEMSELVES

EKUMFI ABOR PINEAPPLE GROWERS ASSOCIATION

Members/Founded: 25 members (9 women),
Founded in 1995
Human resources: Volunteer Leaders
Location: Ekumfi Abor in Mfantseman District / Central 6km to Mankessium

The group has a membership of 25 consisting 16 males and 9 females, under the leadership of a 5 member committee with Mr. S. K. Quansah (Kanawu) as founder and chairperson. The group, although not registered with any government institutions, is a farmer Based Organization with 75% of its members taking farming as their major occupation. Apart from the sugar Loaf pineapple being their commercial produce, the farmers also cultivate maize, pepper, cassava and other crops.

Achievements/Activities:
Increased pineapple (SUGAR LOAF) production since beginning in 1960 to meat higher market demands by introducing modern plantation

Techniques. (planting in lowlands, spacing walking rows, selected planting material)

Impact: A comparison of the traditional hill top planting (A) and ‘’modern techniques’ (B) revealed that B is 4 times more laborious than A (more weeds, more planting efforts). But B pineapples are much bigger in size, but few in quantity (due to spacing). For urban and exports and fruit processing B is more suitable than A.

Challenges /Future Plans: Groups and associations need to attract more processors. Farmers are financially handicapped shortly after the major season when they have sold their produce for the whole year at a low price . Introduce off-farm activities (grasscutter, small ruminants rearing)
