REGIONAL ACTIVITIES FOR FARMERS ORGANIZATIONS

Despite financial constraints ECASARD has able to carry out some activities initiated by the regions. RECs and members were asked to present budgets for practical training and stakeholder maiden meeting towards farmers associations to their regional commodities and strategic plans. Until the end of 2006 another 7 of these activities can be offered by the NS to the regions.

At the end of  June WESTERN region invited 22 oil palm growers to benefits from a training organized by the REC together with MOFA and NORPALM.the group was given practical hints about oil palm nursery management and taken to the plantations of NORPALM. Finally 2000 pre-germinated quality palm nuts were handed out to 4 members groups who will be in charge of the ECASARD nurseries. 4 acres of land have been prepared and are actually being planted; we’ll monitor the result from very close. From 17-19th of july ECASARD grasscutter farmers had a ‘’refresher training’’ organized and facilitated by the ablekuma GC Association(see photo ), an active ECASARD MEMBER. For two days 24 participants from all the regions were taken through the techniques of grasscutter production in a very interactive way.  Sometimes the time keeper even forgrt to call for lunch.  On the second day the group was privileged to see some success  stories going to visit 3 Ablekuma members around ACCRA. It was an  an important forum for exchange of ideas and experience and will contribute sustainable to the further progress of ECASARD’s alternative Livelihood  programme.

Finally, Brong Ahafo Region invited Techiman farmers on the 26th of july to a maiden meeting for margo farmers. 120 participants were given technical information and discussed about possible ways to set up a mango Farmers Association in this pilot district. An interim executive committee was appointed from the different areas and organizations (MOFA,  MOAP, ADRA and ECASARD). They will meet in August for the first time to coordinate the further steps towards a vibrant and active union
